Nigeria’s election trail will come to an end as the parties are now engaged in the final round of canvassing. The campaign will end on February 23rd, two days before the election, which will take place on the 25th of February. More than 93 million voters are expected to cast a ballot to elect the country’s next president and their representatives in Parliament. Again on March 11, they will vote for governorship and State Houses of Assembly.

Analysts are not hazarding a prediction of the outcome of the keenly fought election since it could turn either way. As the country is gearing up to face an election, the outcome of which is beyond prediction, the country is mired in a number of vexatious issues such as fuel crisis, inflation, currency shortage, steep erosion of the value of the currency, etc. Added to these, are the security issues that haunt the west African country.

A few presidential aspirants have pitched their election campaign on the basis of shortcomings of the previous government and promised quick solutions to such vexatious issues. Analysts, in the given situation, predict that people may not vote based on their political ideologies. There could be a situation where the elected representatives both at the federal and state levels would be from different political affiliations, giving way to a coalition government. There are also apprehensions that such a divided house would make decision-making difficult.

As the ruling  APC party seeks re-election, the main opposition party PDP eyes a comeback. Peter Obi of the Labour party can play the role of a spoilsport. Some opine that for the first time in the political history of the country, the electorate would have to choose between two or more strong candidates, making the decisions difficult.
