Nigerian presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, said that if he got elected, the agricultural sector would get top priority and promised focussed attention on Kano State, which is Nigeria’s second-largest city which helps determine the winner.
There is no clear front-runner in the elections; but there are a few leading contenders, other than Abubaker, such as Peoples Democratic Party’s Atiku who lost to Muhammadu Buhari in 2019, and Bola Tinubu of the ruling All Progressives Congress and Peter Obi of the Labour Party. The elections are taking place at a time when the Nigerian economy is facing one of the worst crises triggered by inflation, high unemployment, currency crisis, and internal disturbances in several parts of the country.

Neglect of the agricultural sector, which was once very strong, earning the west African country the ubiquitous name as the granary of Africa, has lost its sheen and many farmers left farming and migrated to cities to get employment. The surge in oil production and exploration had created an illusion that oil could solve the country’s economic ills. But the later developments were negating that hope since the country has been exporting crude oil at a lower price and importing refined oil at a high price. Abubakar also promised to reopen Nigeria’s land borders to spur more trade and commerce. Buhari closed the borders to curb smuggling.
