Morocco and Iraq come closer to improve economic and diplomatic ties

Morocco’s foreign minister and his Iraqi counterpart signed a memorandum of understanding recently. Baghdad welcomed Morocco’s move to reopen its embassy in Iraq which was closed after two Moroccan nationals were kidnapped 18 years ago.

Iraq’s foreign minister Fuad Hussein said that Morocco played an important role in the political and economic fields. It is crucial for Iraq to build a relationship with the Kingdom of Morocco.  In the meantime, Morocco’s top diplomat Nasser Bourita hailed the historic visit, from the standpoint of being the first visit by a foreign minister to Baghdad since a quarter of a century.

Both ministers, while referring to the recent disturbances in West Bank between Israel and Palestine, underscored the need for return of peace and calm and denounced provocative actions.  Morocco is one of the Arab countries that has grown closer to Israel in recent years.
