Nigeria’s ranking in 2022 has further dropped in the latest Corruption Perception Index (CPI) ranking released by Transparency International. TI assesses the levels of corruption in the systems of various countries across the world.
Nigeria’s ranking fell from 150th to 154th position out of 180 countries assessed in the 2022 ranking. The score of 24 out of 100 is the same as the previous year. Nigeria’s CPI ranking in 2019 was 26, 25 in the 2020 assessment, and 24 in the last 2021 record.
The ranking is a commentary on the failure of the country’s efforts to fight corruption. Critics consider the pardon of two jailed former governors – Joshua Dariye of Plateau State and Jolly Nyame of Taraba State – in April 2022 as a major setback to the country’s anti-corruption efforts. The prosecution of the former governors that lasted over 10 years with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) drained scarce public funds with no result in the end.
The Nigerian authorities have always maintained the stand that the basis of the ranking of the global anti-corruption body was flawed.
