Nigerians were racing against time as the final deadline for the collection of their Permanent Voters Card (PVC) coming closer ahead of presidential and national assembly elections

Nigerians were racing against time as the final deadline for the collection of their Permanent Voters Card (PVC) came closer ahead of the presidential and national assembly elections.

The PVC acts as an identification to vote in the upcoming general elections. Nigeria’s electoral body, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), opened a window in December for the last phase of the collection of the cards before the elections. According to the election commission, there was a surge of young Nigerians seeking to register for their voter cards ahead of the elections.  This round of PVC collections would end on January 22.  Eligible voters without their cards would not be allowed to vote in the upcoming poll.

In December, electoral officials expressed concerns about millions of uncollected voter cards across the country. Over six million Nigerians were yet to receive their cards, according to the Independent Election Commission. However, there is a big queue for collecting cards on a day-to-day basis, which is one of the reasons for people not collecting the PVC since they have to spend considerable time collecting it.  Elections in Nigeria are scheduled for February 25. Elections of Governors and state assembly are set to be held on March 11.
