Paris denies meddling with affairs of its ex-colony Burkina Faso

France’s deputy foreign minister Chrysoula Zacharopoulou, who is on a visit to Burkina Faso, denied accusations that Paris was meddling in the already troubled former colony.

Speaking after her exchange with junta leader Captain Ibrahim Traore, the junior French minister affirmed that France was imposing nothing on Burkina Faso. She also discussed the ongoing Sabre (an operation that aims to track down Jihadist leaders in the Sahel region). The talks between both countries came as a response to mounting pressures due to accusations of neo-colonialism and a growing anti-French sentiment encouraged by Captain Traore. The country is reported to have closer ties with Moscow.

Burkina Faso is reeling from a jihadist insurgency. Only last week, French ambassador Luc Hallade was asked to leave. This comes a year after Mali’s junta also ejected France’s ambassador there. Thousands of people have been killed and around two million have fled their homes. The present situation is such that more than a third of the country lies outside the government’s control.
