Tunisian lawyers protested against the newly imposed taxes on legal services saying that they would hit mostly people from disadvantaged backgrounds. Their main protest was against a hike in taxes on legal fees, from 13 to 19 percent, as a part of the government’s move to mop up resources to make up for the revenue gap.

The lawyers made it clear that they would continue protesting till their demands are met; that is mainly the rollback of the increased taxes. They have presented a representation to the finance ministry for rolling back the increased taxes. The increased taxes were imposed as a part of the 2023 Budget presented last week seeking to restore the country’s deficit back to nearly five percent of its GDP as it awaits an IMF bailout. But the lawyers, who have grouped under the Bar Association, feel that it was an attack on their rights and liberties.
