Tourism in Madagascar is regaining momentum, though slowly. It was on the back burner due to the pandemic, which devastated the region when the tourism sector touched its nadir.

The country is known as a major tourist destination because of its biodiversity coupled with virgin beaches and conducive weather. Between January and November this year, the island received only 106 000 tourists, almost one-third of its tourist flow during pre-pandemic times.

High air tickets can be attributed as one reason for the painfully low pick-up. The Confederation of Tourism of Madagascar has already flagged this bottleneck to the authorities and its members feel that a gradual pick up of the tourist inflows would encourage the airlines to slash the ticket prices to motivate more tourists to visit the island nation.

The country is also facing other bottlenecks that hamper tourist flows, such as dilapidated roads, which make access to certain tourist spots like Morondava and  Baobab Alley, in the west of the country difficult. For next year-2023- the tourist department expects the arrival of 300,000 visitors. Importantly, Madagascar has been awarded the title of “Indian Ocean’s Leading Green Destination 2022” by the World Travel Awards in its 29th edition in recognition of its biodiversity and scenic beaches.  The country is laying extreme focus on ecotourism and community-based tourism, with the twin objectives of creating a segment, which is environment-friendly and at the same provides employment opportunities to local people.
