An agreement to build a submarine cable connecting Egypt and Greece was signed between the Telecom Egypt and Grid Telecom, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Independent Power Transmission Operator (IPTO) in Greece. Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer at Telecom Egypt, Adel Hamed, and chairman & CEO of Independent Power Transmission Operator (IPTO), Manousos Manousakis signed the agreement on behalf of their companies.
The agreement is in line with Telecom Egypt’s expansion strategy, to expand its global network by opening a new gate to Eastern Europe. The new cable is considered one of the shortest tracks for data transformation from the Balkans to other destination in Western Europe.
The collaboration will provide Telecom Egypt access to more than 140 connection points in more than 60 countries around the globe. The negotiations started in February this year with the visit of Egypt’s Information and Communication Technology Minister, Amr Talaat to Greece. The visit resulted in the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Telecom Egypt and Grid Telecom – The strategic MOU set the base for the exploration of different connectivity options between Greece and Egypt, through existing and future optical fiber links. Minister Talaat revealed that a new landing point will be established in Eastern Europe on Greek coasts which will be of immense advantage considering that 90 percent of data traffic between the east and the west pass through Egyptian territories.
