Life and business in SA disrupted by floods

Heavy rainfall has caused widespread damage to homes and businesses in Johannesburg and Cape Town. The essential services such as electricity and sanitation have been disrupted.

The South African Weather Service had issued   severe level 3 thunderstorm warning. The Disaster Risk Management spokesperson said that they are assessing the damages. The thunderstorm led to power outages and it was reported that the Municipality’s Electro-Technical Services division is attending to the outages and trying to restore power at the earliest. Medicare EMR confirmed that heavy rainfall caused the collapse of the hospital roof. The staff and patients were evacuated from the Paarl facility near Cape Town.

In Johannesburg, the flooding in Setswetla in Alexandra township, left the community in distress due to the building of shacks on riverbanks. The officials urged communities to adhere to water safety measures that the department has put in place. The humanitarian and clean up efforts are underway.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued heavy rain warning to some more parts of the country. It appealed to the residents to follow authentic weather updates like South African Weather Service page on social media and news updates and avoid unauthorised videos.  Central and western parts of the Free State have been issued an orange level 5 warning.

The floods in April 2022 caused severe damages to infrastructure in various provinces of South Africa particularly the province of KwaZulu-Natal. It left over 400 people dead, 4000 homes lost and 9000 people displaced.
