The annual US-Africa summit, which brings together several African leaders, organizations, and top US government officials will take place on 13-15 December 2022 in the US. Billed as Biden’s summit, the event will feature announcements of new US investment in the region and efforts being made by the US administration for improving food security in the region. There will be increased stress on the values of democracy, good governance, and climate change.
The annual US-Africa summit, which brings together several African leaders, organizations, and top US government officials will take place on 13-15 December 2022 in the US. Billed as Biden’s summit, the event will feature announcements of new US investment in the region and efforts being made by the US administration for improving food security in the region. There will be increased stress on the values of democracy, good governance, and climate change.
The discussions will also be centred around the African Growth and Opportunity Act, which was enacted in 2000. That granted duty-free access to the US market for most products from sub-Saharan nations that meet standards on rights and democracy. The pact will expire in 2025. Against this backdrop, the African leaders will seek clarity on the continuance of the Act. An increased presence of China in Africa and Russia trying to make its presence felt particularly in the poorer Sahel region may also figure at the meeting in a discreet manner. There will be efforts by the US to woo back the African leaders from their proximity to both Russia and China. That may necessitate the rollover of the Opportunity Act, and of course, flavouring it with more sops and incentives.

The United States had invited all African Union members who have good standing with them. Leaders from South Africa, Egypt, DRC, Equatorial Guinea, Tunisia, and other African countries are expected to attend the three-day summit.
