After weeks of fighting between rebels and a coalition of armed civilian protection militia, road connectivity between Rutshuru and Goma were restored. The roads were reopened two days back in the North Kivu region of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Kibati, near the town of Rutshuru, was one among the several areas that fell under the control of the M23 armed group. The occupied towns were subjected to violence but also widespread hunger and famine. With no one to harvest, the crops perished.

 Fighting between the two groups continued in eastern Congo for more than a year, after M23 rebels resurrected after nearly a decade. Many people got stuck due to the eruption of violence. With the opening of the roads, trucks packed with products and people were able to return home.

The UN the M23 rebel group killed men, women and children in two villages in Rutshuru territory last month. A preliminary investigation by the United Nations Joint Human Rights Office in Congo and MONUSCO, the UN peacekeeping mission in the country, people in the captured area were subjected to widespread violence.
