The streets of Khartoum were flooded by thousands of demonstrators on December 3rd protesting against UN-led efforts to solve the political crisis in the country since last year’s coup. Sudan was rocked by political turmoil after the military takeover in October 2021 while the country was in the throes of transition to civilian rule installed after the 2019 ouster of long-time Islamist autocrat Omar al-Bashir.
The protests came after military leaders and a key civilian bloc (Forces for Freedom and Change, FFC) announced plans to sign an initial deal under the guidance of the UN.

The demonstrators alleged that the proposed deal is a settlement between a small group that does not represent all of the Sudanese people and the military. They demanded the involvement of all the people of Sudan. Calling it an agreement with the secular group (the FFC, Ed.) they refused to accept a secular proposal. Some of the demonstrators demanded that the constitution should be based on the Quran and the teachings of the prophet.
