The call for the resignation of South African President Cyril Ramaphosa is getting louder as a number of people and political affiliations are joining the bandwagon

The call for the resignation of South African President Cyril Ramaphosa is getting louder as a number of people and political affiliations are joining the bandwagon.

They urge him to step down after a parliamentary probe found he may have breached the country’s anti-corruption laws related to the theft of millions of Phala Phala game farms, as reported by www.trendsnafrica.com from time to time.

The charge against him leveled by the former head of intelligence, Arthur Fraser, was that Ramaphosa tried to conceal the theft of millions of dollars at his farm in 2020. He was due to appear in parliament on Thursday and answer questions. But that date has been postponed. However,  the evidence against him was seemingly overwhelming, according to legal sources.

The parliamentary panel raised questions about the source of the money and why it wasn’t disclosed to financial authorities. This could be a potential conflict between the president’s business and official interests. The president, however, has denied any wrongdoing, insisting that the money proceeded from the sale of animals on his farm. The clamoring for him to step down is also heard from his own party members, which are growing in numbers, as days go by. Opposition parties are hell-bent on his resignation.

The imbroglio is also getting spilled over to the economic health of the country, as the currency rand shaved off its value against the US dollar significantly since the parliamentary report got published.

There are also reports that Ramaphosa may survive the growing demand for his impeachment or resignation. Lawmakers are expected to debate the report shortly (Tuesday).  They will vote on whether further action should be taken, including whether to proceed with impeachment proceedings. ANC lawmakers are a majority in Parliament.  They may block any attempt to impeach their leader.
