Sudan holds Dates Festival to market to find more export outlets

The Fourth International Dates Festival being held in Khartoum is attracting date lovers from all over the world. Kicked off on November 30, it is being held under the aegis of the Sudanese Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry

The Fourth International Dates Festival being held in Khartoum is attracting date lovers from all over the world. Kicked off on November 30, it is being held under the aegis of the Sudanese Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry.

The festival is aimed at increasing the international recognition of Sudanese dates and developing production, marketing, and exports. Amongst the participants at the festival include,  250 farmers from the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Mauritania, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia.

Sudan’s annual production of dates is about 330,000 tons. It has a date palm population of about 8 million and is the eighth-largest producer in the world.

The country that produces the most dates in the world, according to some statistics available in the public domain, is Egypt. The north African country produces more than 1 million metric tons of fresh dates every year. The world is heavily dependent on the agriculture of Egypt for its date supply, and Egypt has made a number of changes to increase its production of dates during the past few years. Saudi Arabia was the leading global exporter of fresh or dried dates in 2021, with an export value of about US$322.84 million. Israel was the second leading exporter, exceeding US$317 million U.S. The other largest producers/exporters are Israel, Iran, Tunisia, UAE, Algeria, the US, and India.
