The Ministry of Health and Social Services of Namibia has launched a revised National Medicines Policy (NMP). The first edition of the NMP was launched 24 years ago.
Speaking about the revised Policy, Minister of Health and Social Services, Dr Kalumbi Shangula said that the new policy offers a comprehensive framework to regulate services in the pharmaceutical sector. These include training and research; manufacturing; regulation and quality assurance. In the field of pharmaceutical supply, it will guide quantification, procurement, inventory management, and stock control, as well as the rational use of medicines and related substances.
He added that the NMP had to be revised to meet the evolving health needs of the people and to bring it in line with the current national strategic development plans
The Minister stated that the Namibian Pharmaceutical sector needed to improve regulatory capacity, procurement practices of health products, and warehousing and distribution capacity of the central and regional medical stores. Ensuring supply chain integrity and improving interoperability of health information and pharmaceutical inventory/stock management tools across the supply chain are the other areas to be addressed.

Some of the strategic objectives of the policy included new, emerging, and re-emerging diseases and medicines; financing and pricing of medicines; global trade in pharmaceuticals; human capacity development; research and development; and technical cooperation and assistance, he said.
