Kenya’s Fish farming industry is estimated to lose over 16 million dollars due to a natural phenomenon occurring in Lake Victoria in Kenya. Climate change could be the triggering factor according to experts for this phenomenon known as Upwelling. When it occurs, the temperature of the water changes and oxygen levels deplete, leading to the deaths of fish in the affected area.
When this phenomenon takes place, the bottom water with low oxygen comes on top and replaces the warm water. This displacement of the top water moves or covers some distance. The cages in the area, the home of fish will be deprived of Oxygen and eventually die.
