A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between Microsoft Egypt and Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company (EGAS) to jointly develop EGAS’ sustainability road map. The partnership followed EGAS adoption of Microsoft’s 5 R’s approach, which contributes to the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The agreement pertains to cooperation on two aspects of methane detection and the Microsoft sustainability manager.

The partnership is in line with the efforts of the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources to achieve its vision of a more sustainable oil and gas industry, by cutting carbon emissions and enhancing environmental sustainability, by seeking the expertise of global companies.

Detection and rectification of methane leaks into the atmosphere is an important factor in controlling global warming. Microsoft’s space-based methane detection solution will enable EGAS to check and detect anomalies in real time and take necessary measures to control and reduce those emissions.

The Microsoft Sustainability Manager tool will help EGAS to collate emissions-related data to streamline data ingestion, sharing, and reporting assisting EGAS to achieve its sustainability targets as per the international goals of sustainable development and Egypt’s 2030 Vision. The partnership also includes skilling the EGAS staff by Microsoft in the use of the technologies being implemented.
