Seychelles and Taiwan have negotiated a new fisheries agreement affecting a number of changes in the previous agreement including allowing both countries to fish in each other’s waters. Seychelles authorities maintain that the step would help its fishing industry to increase the catches.

The Principal Secretary for Fisheries, Roy Clarisse, said that the changes made to the agreement were to ensure that it was transparent by removing a non-disclosure clause in the previous agreement to make it compliant with the Fisheries Transparency Initiative’s (FiTI) standards. Among the other changes that were made to the agreement include reducing the number of boats that could fish in Seychelles from 240 to 100 and increase of licensing fees.  A six-month license which was US$17,500, will now cost US$25,000.  The fee for a one-year license has increased from US$24,000 to US$33,000.  The term of the license is also extended to one calendar year, which was earlier six months from October to March.

The new agreement will last for three years with a mid-term review after 18 months.  This, the government officials said would ensure maximum revenue for Seychelles. Also, the agreement stipulates that the industrial fishing vessels will also now have to make at least one Port Call at Port Victoria per year. Seychelles has three such agreements with the European Union, Mayotte, and Mauritius.
