The second contingent of Kenyan troops to be deployed in the war-ravaged east of the DRC arrived in Goma recently.  They have joined over 900 Kenyan troops that are stationed in the Democratic Republic of Congo to strengthen the military of the host country to face the attacks from rebel M23 fighters.

They will be joined by troops from other member states of the East African Community (EAC).  The rebels now control key localities forcing thousands of Congolese to flee their homes. The situation has arisen because of the renewed attacks of M23.

The M23 rebel group rose to prominence about a decade ago. Their fighters seized control of Goma, a strategic place lying on the border of Rwanda. DRC accuses Rwanda of covertly helping the M23 forces because of their tribal affiliations with the rebel forces.    After long years of fighting, M23entered into a peace agreement with the DRC government. However, they resorted to violent attacks late last year on the plea that the terms that were in the peace agreement were not implemented by the DRC.
