The World Health Organization (WHO) called for a massive influx of food and medicines into Ethiopia’s Tigray region following the ceasefire deal, since people living there are desperately in need of such relief measures. The region is facing a severe humanitarian crisis because of the conflict, which killed many and displaced millions, WHO said.
WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus welcomed the breakthrough ceasefire agreement reached but warned it was already a week on and nothing was moving in terms of food aid or medicines. He said many people are dying from treatable diseases and starvation.
The WHO chief lamented that especially after the ceasefire agreement, he was expecting that food and medicine would flow immediately, which he said was not happening. Incidentally, Tedros is himself from Tigray and was Ethiopia’s health and foreign minister. He called for the reopening of basic services such as banking and telecoms and called for journalists to be allowed into the region.
