Arab leaders gathered in the Algerian capital recently for their first summit after a few countries in the region normalized their ties with Israel and resolved to continue discussing their development issues.  Since the last Arab League summit in 2019, several members of the 22-member bloc have normalised ties with the Jewish state.

The United Arab Emirates is the third country, after Egypt and Jordan, which normalized ties with Israel in a US-led initiative. Then Bahrain and Morocco and a provisional agreement with Sudan followed. This move has worsened   Morocco’s decades-old rivalry with its neighbour, Algeria.

The summit was postponed several times due to the coronavirus pandemic. Importantly, it coincides with elections in Israel. There are speculations that the elections could see hawkish ex-premier Benjamin Netanyahu returned to power. Algeria remains a steadfast supporter of the Palestinians, It is also mediating a reconciliation deal in October between rival factions Fatah and Hamas.
