UN rights experts decried the lack of accountability while dealing with migrants from Africa by the West. It termed the west’s approach towards African migrants as a stark dehumanisation of African migrants and called for accountability of those who perpetrated such actions.  It may be recalled that 23 migrants were killed while trying to cross from Morocco to Spain in June due to various reasons including the brutal attack carried out by the Moroccan and Spanish police.

Experts decried that despite the alarming developments, there is still no concrete accountability pinned on people responsible for the carnal actions months after dozens of migrants of African descent, including refugees and asylum seekers, died during violent encounters with border security forces in Melilla, Spain. Around 2,000 mostly Sudanese nationals tried to enter the Spanish enclave. The number of deaths is variously reported between 23 and 37.

Experts said they condemned the continuing lack of accountability for the stark dehumanisation of African migrants at the perimeter of Europe. The violence video documented at Melilla’s gate tragically reveals the status quo of the European Union’s borders, namely racialized exclusion and deadly violence deployed to keep out people of African and Middle Eastern descent, and other non-white populations.

Experts said they had yet to see signs of concrete accountability while blaming Europe as a whole for this humanitarian crisis. In a hard-hitting statement, experts said that border violence and death, point to a willingness to sacrifice the lives of Africans and other migrants and refugees to secure the perimeter of Europe at any cost, with the least concern for human lives.
