Zimbabwe’s ruling party, ZANU-PF, endorsed President Emmerson Mnangagwa as sole party candidate ahead of next year’s polls. President Mnangagwa at a party meeting called for unity in the party to bring the ruling party back into power. Eighty-year -old, Emmerson Mnangagwa, came to power in 2017 after toppling long-time ruler Robert Mugabe in a coup backed by the army.
In 2018, he won disputed elections which his main rival Nelson Chamisa, then leader of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) insists were rigged and manipulated.

The office of the president of Zimbabwe was established in 1980, when the country gained independence from the United Kingdom. Zimbabwe was originally a parliamentary republic, with the president serving in mostly a ceremonial role. Real power was vested in the prime minister, Robert Mugabe.
