President Cyril Ramaphosa is looking weakened as he seeks to win a second term in the 2024 presidential elections. The coming ANC election would decide whether he would pull through with his announced decision to seek a second term in office.

Ramaphosa is caught up in a scandal linked to illegal money found in one of his properties during a burglary in 2020. This tarnished the image of the man who presented himself as a person with an impeccable image when he succeeded Jacob Zuma, who was himself brought down for corruption.

Will Ramaphosa still be nominated by the ANC: this is a trillion-dollar question being raised by many. Opinions differ. There are people, a good number of them, who hold the view that he is the clear favourite though his credibility has been shaken. They admit that he may face resistance from some segments of the party bigwigs, mainly from those who swear allegiance to former president Jacob Zuma. Cyril Ramaphosa is a former protege of Nelson Mandela. He has been an active and wealthy businessman before returning to politics. Recent polls show that the ANC, which fell below 50 percent for the first time in its history in local elections in 2021, could repeat that performance in 2024.

Who are the potential candidates, who can thwart the victory of Cyril Ramaphosa?  It could be former Health Minister Zweli Mkhize, who resigned in August 2021 after being accused of misappropriating budgets allocated to Covid’s prevention campaigns. The other candidate could be Lindiwe Sisulu and Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma. But they have not garnered enough support so far.  Also, it has to be borne in mind that many party workers’ interests are linked to the success of the ANC in the election. They would put forward the candidature of the winnable candidate, despite their reservation against Ramaphosa. That way, many believe that Ramaphosa has a slender edge over all others.
