Floods in Nigeria have taken its toll killing many people, dislocating public life, and making several hundreds of people homeless.
According to the authorities, the floods have killed more than 600 people and displaced 1.3 million since June across the country. The rise in water levels this year is particularly meteoric; more than in 2012 and 2020. The South East of the country is the most affected region. Affected people are parked in schools and other buildings. Some people in the submerged villages are taking shelter in trees and other high-rise uninhabitable places.
Crops in thousands of hectares are destroyed and the country is staring at massive food shortages and famines. Relief works could not reach several places because of non – the accessibility of these regions.
The main reason for floods is the overflowing of Cameroon, which runs along the length of Nigeria’s eastern border. Because of the incessant rains, water is released from a dam in northern Cameroon, causing flooding downstream in Nigeria.

Nigeria’s minister of humanitarian affairs, Sadiya Umar Farouq, blamed the scale of the disaster on the failure of the government other than her own, to take timely action, despite enough warnings. States, local governments, and communities did not take heed of the several warnings of a possible flood, she lamented.
