- A statement from the Ministry in charge of Relations with Parliament said that the objective of the decision is to ensure a sufficient supply of beef in the local market.
A draft decree was adopted by Morocco’s governing council to temporarily suspend import duties on domestic cattle.
A statement from the Ministry in charge of Relations with Parliament said that the objective of the decision is to ensure sufficient supply of beef in the local market. Accordingly, import duties on domestic cattle that weigh 550 kilograms or more until December 31, 2023, has been suspended. The statement explained that the decision was taken in view of the several challenges faced by the livestock sector. Morocco has been facing severe water scarcity leading to a high cost of production of red meat and livestock feed. Driven by high inflation in the country meat product prices rose by 1.4%.
The ministry assured that the measure will not have any adverse impact on Morocco’s domestic red meat industry. Importers will be notified on further details on the terms of import such as the breed of domestic cattle etc.
Meanwhile, Morocco has initiated steps to address its water scarcity crisis. The government has decided to discontinue irrigation subsidies for avocado, watermelon, and citrus fruit cultivation.
