Lesotho’s presidential election: Dark horse business tycoon Sam Matekane takes provisional initial lead

Sam Matekane, Lesotho’s leader of the Revolution for Prosperity (RFP) party has taken an early lead in the parliamentary race, according to provisional results being announced by the electoral commission.

The 64-year business tycoon was considered a dark horse in the race for the presidential election, as reported by www.trendsnafrica.com earlier. His supporters took to the streets to celebrate the lead, which may possibly lead to his victory.

The main challengers in the polls included the All Basotho Convention party and the Democratic Congress party.  About 1.5 million people were registered to cast their ballot on Friday (Oct 7). There were more than 50 competing parties and candidates in the fray.  Turnout in the last elections in 2017 was only 47 percent.  The figure could have gone up this election, according to some election observers.
