Google invested over 20 per cent of its $1bn commitment in Africa

  • In the last one year, Google invested more than 20 per cent of its commitment to the continent. Speaking to journalists during a round table online conversation after the Google for Africa event last week, the Director of Google Cloud Africa, Niral Patel disclosed that the subsea cable, Equiano, would be launched before the end of 2022.

Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google announced in 2021’s Google for Africa, a $1bn investment commitment to the continent across five years to support a range of activities, from improved connectivity to investment in start-ups, to help boost Africa’s digital transformation.

In the last one year, Google invested more than 20 per cent of its commitment to the continent. Speaking to journalists during a round table online conversation after the Google for Africa event this week Director of Google Cloud Africa, Niral Patel disclosed that the subsea cable, Equiano, would be launched before the end of 2022. Apart from expanding its network through the Equiano subsea cable, It is also building Dedicated Cloud Interconnect sites in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Lagos and Nairobi.
