Delegates from over 50 countries participated in a Pre-COP27 meeting held in DRC’s capital, Kinshasa, as reported by www.trendsnafrica.com in an earlier dispatch. The purpose of the event was to prepare for the COP27 summit taking place in Egypt in November.
Climate activists praised the progress made in organizing the event and wanted to make sure that previous promises were kept. The conference endorsed the view that a new protocol for loss and damages should be evolved. The DRC’s senior climate negotiator said the objective was to reach an agreement on funding money commensurate with the needs of developing countries.

The consensus was that the developed world is even now sticking to rhetoric and floating figures to catch the headlines. Not much commitment and work on the ground are visible. Some of the delegates wanted to have a clear commitment from the developed world and major polluters to compensate for carbon emissions because of them. It could be something that is based on needs and not any ballpark figures, often quoted as US$ 100 billion as orchestrated in the 2009 Copenhagen Summit by Hilary Clinton, the then US Secretary of State.
