One of Libya’s rival governments has signed an economic and maritime deal with Turkey that has increased tensions between the rival factions.
The MOU signed on October 3rd aims at strengthening bilateral cooperation in the hydrocarbon and oil sectors. The agreement also includes mobilising international efforts on a roadmap for Libyan elections. Turkey has been supporting Libya’s Tripoli-based government, headed by Abdul Hamid Dbeibah.
Speaking about the deal, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said that the hydrocarbon agreement signed between the two countries aims to promote cooperation between Turkish companies and Libyan companies in areas like exploration and drilling with a “win-win” understanding in maritime jurisdictions both on land and at sea.
After the NATO-backed uprising that toppled and killed the Libyan leader Muammar Gadhafi in 2011, the country has been split between rival administrations in the east and the west.
