As part of President Biden’s announcement of $2 billion in additional funding to support global food security at the United Nations General Assembly, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has awarded $28.5 million to support Gambia’s food security program. The funds released will be under the McGovern-Dole International Food for Education and Child Nutrition Program, administered by USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Service.

The mandate of the McGovern-Dole International Food for Education and Child Nutrition Program is to support education, child development and food security in low-income, food-deficit countries across the world. Under the program, the US donates agricultural commodities and provides financial and technical assistance to support school feeding and maternal and child nutrition projects.

The focus of the McGovern-Dole Program is to eliminate hunger and improve literacy and primary education, particularly for girls. It offers school meals, teacher training and related support, to boost school enrolment and academic performance. The programme also includes nutrition programs for pregnant and nursing women, infants, and preschoolers
