Tanzania -India to deepen collaboration in the agriculture sector

At a recently held Tanzania and India Private Sector Foundation (TPSF) business roundtable on agriculture sector in Dar es Salaam, India and Tanzania have identified potential areas for collaboration in the agriculture sector. Tanzania is in the process of   establishing irrigation schemes in the 22 largest water basins to boost agriculture output in the country. India will cooperate and support Tanzania in its effort to improve its irrigation systems.

Addressing the business roundtable Deputy Minister for Agriculture Mr Anthony Mavunde revealed that during the current  financial year, the government has allocated  large funds for the construction of irrigation schemes in 22 large basins to support Tanzanian farmers. The water basins included under the project are Lake Victoria, Malagarasi River, Songwe, Manonga, Ifakara, Idete, Mkomazi, Pangani as well as the Rufiji River valley.Mr Mavunde  also added that India and Tanzania will join hands to produce quality seeds in the country. The government also has plans to develop and build the capacity of research centres and laboratories. Tanzania’s exports of agricultural commodities such as tobacco, cashews, avocado and coffee have witnessed a significant surge in recent times.
