- European Union Parliament last week adopted a resolution seeking Uganda, Tanzania, and the Total Energies SE to delay the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) project. It is alleged that the Pipeline will be a hindrance to the socioeconomic progress of both Tanzania and Uganda.
European Union Parliament last week adopted a resolution seeking Uganda, Tanzania, and the Total Energies SE to delay the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) project. It is alleged that the Pipeline will be a hindrance to the socioeconomic progress of both Tanzania and Uganda. The Resolution called on the governments of Uganda and Tanzania to ensure that human rights standards are respected by authorities, security forces and policies. Responding to the EU Parliament Resolution, both governments clarified that they have adhered to all the procedures with no violation of human rights or socioeconomic progress.
Clarification was made public by the Minister for Energy January Makamba, who also stated that the government is now getting ready to clarify the matter in the EU Parliament. It is preparing an official statement to be presented to the European Union Parliament.
The document will be submitted by Tanzania’s Ambassador to Belgium, Jestas Nyamanga. The statement will clarify misinformation if any about the execution of the project that covers 1,443kms from Hoima (Uganda) to Chongoleani, Tanga in Tanzania. The EU had alleged that nearly 118 000 people were affected as their homes were destroyed to facilitate the construction of the pipeline. Amb Nyamanga who is also accredited to the EU Commission stated that the project affected only 331 Tanzanian households who are being compensated with new houses.
