With looming glitches in fishing, fishermen engaged in basket fishing in north eastern Africa, are now focussing on tourism for their livelihood. But tourism needs infrastructure including hotels, good roads and most important security. But what the persons engaged in tourism are getting only promises from the government and no real actions on the ground. Lack of infrastructure in a region where power supplies remain patchy and access is poor may not be the preferred destination for the tourists.
Natives say that at the beginning of the year, government officials visited the region and promised investments to attract tourists. The governor of Tshopo province also promised that all the problems would be fixed. Considerable investments are needed for modernizing the sites of the Wagenya falls, such as good hotels, well laid out roads etc for the tourists to flock. But the region lacks all these amenities.

Much of the DRC, one of the world’s poorest countries, has crumbling or infrastructure is non-existent due to mismanagement, successive wars, and chronic corruption. To build the basic amenities that the tourists are looking for will involve proper planning, investment and policy parameters. The moot point is whether such things are going to come to the region sooner or later.
