After years of ruptured diplomatic relations, Egypt has extended its hand of friendship to Qatar. Egypt’s president is on a two day official visit to Qatar from 14-15 September in a bid to rebuild ties. Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi will meet Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani who also visited Cairo in June. During his visit in June, the two countries discussed various issues, including cooperation in the energy and agriculture sectors.
The relations between the two countries soured in 2013, when el-Sissi, as defense minister, led the military’s overthrow of Egypt’s Islamist President Mohamed Morsi. Morsi, hailed from the Muslim Brotherhood and was backed by Qatar. In 2017, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Bahrain joined together in a boycott of Qatar, seeking to force Doha to change its policies. Finally, in 2021, Qatar signed a declaration with the four to normalize relations. After the agreement, relations improved with the exchange of delegations of senior officials for bilateral discussions.
