The seven-judge bench of the Supreme Court of Kenya has validated the election victory of President-Elect William Ruto’s and dismissed allegations of irregularities in the election. The Supreme Court confirmed the results declared by the electoral commission, that Ruto garnered 50 per cent plus one vote.

The verdict followed Odinga’s petition alleging that the electoral commission manipulated the votes to favour him. Chief Justice Martha Koome declared that the bench found no merit in the claims made by the petitioners and unanimously dismissed the claims of Azimio Leader Raila Odinga and seven others to uphold the election of Ruto.

According to the reports, Ruto is expected to be sworn in next week formally taking over from President Uhuru Kenyatta who had backed Odinga as his successor. Following the ruling, the Assumption of Office of President Committee has to immediately take necessary action and ensure a smooth handover of power.

Ruto was declared the President Elect on August 15, 2022, after winning7,176,141 votes, representing 50.49 per cent of the votes.  His opponent Odinga won 6,942,930 votes, translating to 48.85 per cent of the votes cast.
