Guinea’s ruling junta has assured the Confederation of African Football (CAF) mission that it would meet the timetable for hosting the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (CAN). CAF has sent a team to Guinea to assess its progress in hosting the tournament.

Colonel Mamady Doumbouya, head of the military junta, met with the scrutineers recently and told them that 2025 for hosting the cup was feasible for the country. CAF was toying with the idea of postponing the tournament until 2026 or 2027.

The president said that the organization of the tournament was a national priority that it would be held in time and all infrastructure requirements would be completed by that time. Organization of the tournament involves huge investments, which the country has to find ways to meet. Hosting Africa’s biggest sporting event is a major challenge for Guinea amidst the political turbulence brewing in the country.   The ouster of octogenarian president Alpha Conde after bloody protests over his bid for a third term in office had put the country in a quandary.  The West African bloc ECOWAS has been pushing for an early return to civilian rule. The 2023 event will be hosted by Ivory Coast.
