The latest data from the International Trade Centre, has revealed that plastics, pharmaceuticals and sugar topped the imports of Nigeria between 2020 and 2021. During the period, the import of the three commodities stood around $10.98bn. The country spent $1.82bn on sugar, $4.21bn on pharmaceutical products, and $4.95bn on plastic products.
The top suppliers of these commodities included: China, Korea Republic, Saudi Arabia, India, United States of America, India, Netherlands, Denmark, United Arab Emirates, Brazil, and Switzerland, among others.
As regards exports, Nigeria exported products worth N1.77 trillion between January and June 2022 to different parts of the world, according to the Nigerian Export Promotion Council. This was revealed by the Executive Director of the NEPC, Dr. Ezra Yakusak, at a recent press briefing on the half-year performance report of the agency. He also stated that Nigeria recorded a significant growth in non-oil exports as products worth $2.593 billion were exported between January and June 2022. Of the top exported products in the first half of the year of 2022, urea/fertilizer accounted for 32.49% of the total export while cocoa beans, sesame dead and Aluminium ingots contributed 12.65%, 7% and 5.07% respectively.
