MTN Nigeria conducted trials of its 5G technology in seven Nigerian cities for launching the network.   It is more than eight months after the telecom firm -Mafab Communications Limited – won bidding for the two slots available for the start of the spectrum services in the country.

Both – MTN and Mafab- received permission to operate 5G services in the first week of May. Broadband penetration in Africa’s most populous country is very low at less than half of the people, as contained in the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) report.

NCC expects coverage to hit 70 percent in 2025.  That is possible only when MTN leverages the new technology in reaching the underserved and unserved places in conjunction with other telcos.

The cities earmarked for the rollout of the 5G are Lagos, Port Harcourt, Ibadan, Abuja, Maiduguri, Kano, and Owerri. However, no date has been disclosed yet for the launch. MTN Nigeria is currently the country’s biggest public company by revenue with a turnover of N1.7 trillion for 2021 and N950.1 billion in the first half of the year.
