Australian firm Invictus Energy will start drilling its first well in Zimbabwe in a few days to look for gas and oil. It is estimated that 20 trillion cubic feet of gas are located in this well in the Muzarabani-Mbire area, in the north, bordering Mozambique. Zimbabwe is presently facing an acute power shortage and the gas find will help the country immensely. The aim of the company is to build a gas-to-power facility to supply the national grid.
There is also opposition to this project. Environmentalists apprehend construction of pipelines could lead to forced displacement, and harm the vegetation and animal habitat
The new oil and gas well will be 3.5km deep and is in partnership with the Zimbabwean government. The project is being called “a game changer” for the country and Zimbabwe’s President, Emmerson Mnangagwa, said the government was excited about potential oil and gas discovery in Zimbabwe. The untapped oil and gas deposits, he said, present in the country were huge and will create an ecosystem for competitive investment opportunities. The drilling is expected to start next month. If gas is found and feasible to tap commercially, this could lead to Zimbabwe’s first gas production and could ease the country’s perennial power woes. It was previously explored by US giant Mobil Oil in the early 1990s.
