Kenya’s presidential poll is over, and many feel the outcome is beyond prediction since the fight was neck to neck. The main contestants among a pool of presidential aspirants are the outgoing President Uhuru Kenyatta’s deputy for his two terms, Ruto, and Kenyatta-backed veteran politician Raila Odinga for the top seat.
President Uhuru Kenyatta, the son of Kenya’s first president, angered Ruto by backing long-time rival Odinga after their bitter 2017 election contest. It is widely held that the transition would be peaceful, unlike what had happened in many countries, where there were allegations of violence and mass-scale election rigging.
According to the Constitution, if neither wins more than 50 percent, Kenya would be forced to hold a run-off for the first time in its history. All presidential election outcomes had been contested since 2002. The results of the keenly contested election would come only after a few days-six or seven days. While people are waiting for a peaceful transition of power, at the back of their minds, there are memories of how previous election disputes had descended into deadly violence.

More than 22 million people were registered to vote in an election taking place against a backdrop of soaring prices for food and fuel, frequent droughts and deep disenchantment with the political elite, particularly among the youth. Analysts have in recent days suggested that Odinga has a narrow chance over his young opponent Ruto.
