Senegal’s electoral commission has announced on August 4th that Senegalese President Macky Sall’s ruling coalition has lost its parliamentary majority. The announcement came after The Benno Bokk Yakaar (BBY) coalition managed to win only 82 out of 165 seats. The opposition coalition Yewwi Askane won 56 seats while their allies Wallu Senegal won 24 seats.

The ruling coalition had claimed a winning majority immediately one day after the elections. This is the first time in the history of Senegal since its independence in1960 that the ruling party has lost the majority. The three small coalitions, that won three other seats may wield heavy influence on the final shape of the government.

The opposition had accused President Sall of abusing power to eliminate opposition and eyeing an extra term in 2024 creating fears about the West African country’s democratic stability. His failure to rule out these claims seems to have gone against him. Several countries in the region have witnessed armed coups overthrowing elected Presidents.
