The demand for Kenyan Avocados in China is on the rise. Supported by the government and other stakeholders, local exporters of Kenya are tapping into the Chinese market for Avocados.

Recently, Sunripe Vertical Agro has flagged off its first batch of fresh avocados to China. It is the second company to export fresh avocados to Shanghai this month. Kenyan Agricultural firm Kakuzi PLC was the first company in the country to export fresh avocados to Shanghai, China last week.

According to experts, Kenya has taken only three and a half years to make its mark while other competitors like Mexico and South Africa have taken almost ten years. After shipping from Mombasa port, Kenyan Avocados take about twenty-four days to arrive in China. The exporters have to comply with the  standards by the General Administration of Customs of the People’s Republic of China (GACC).

Avocado farming is also being encouraged to step up exports. China and Kenya signed agreements in January this year, to promote bilateral trade. Two of the protocols covered the export of avocados and aquatic products from Kenya to China by Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya and Chinese Ambassador Zhou Pingjian.
