Tunisians have begun voting on Monday (25th July) on the issue of whether to accept a new constitution put forward by President Kais Saied. The result of the referendum will determine whether Tunisia changes from a hybrid parliamentary system or a presidential one.
Around 9.3 million out of Tunisia’s 12 million people — civilians aged over 18 have opted in or been automatically registered to vote, according to the electoral commission’s report. A sizeable segment of people refused to take part in the referendum process alleging that it was an effort to grab power by one person. However, there are people supporting the president telling that the current state of political discourse should change for the better.

The referendum comes a year to the day after Saied sacked the government and froze parliament in a dramatic power grab. At that time, Tunisia was facing a surging Covid-19 pandemic. Saied has been criticised by his opponents for what they say has amounted to a coup and for bringing about a one-man rule.
