· According to official data, exports accounted for almost ninety percent of Rwanda’s trade with ECCAS worth over Rwf155.4 billion while its imports were worth over Rwf16.4 billion.
Minister of Trade and Industry of Rwanda Béata Habyarimana disclosed that Rwanda regarded the Economic Community of the Central African States (ECCAS) bloc as a potential market for Rwandan products. Rwanda plans to devote more efforts to step up its trade with the bloc where the country is exporting far more than it imports.
According to official data, exports accounted for almost ninety percent of Rwanda’s trade with ECCAS worth over Rwf155.4 billion while its imports were worth over Rwf16.4 billion.
ECCAS member countries include Gabon, Congo Brazzaville, Angola, Equatorial Guinea, and DRC .Efforts are being made to strengthen the transport links. RwandAir signed air agreements with Gabon, Congo and Cameroon and it is currently making flights to Libreville, Brazzaville and Douala. DRC is an exception as the economic cooperation was put on hold due to the ongoing insecurity. It was noted that Rwanda has a major market in countries such as Gabon, Congo Brazzaville, and CAR, which depended on food imports from Europe.
Rwanda is a member of four economic blocs such as The Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), the East African Community (EAC), ECCAS and the relatively new African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
Apart from ECCAS, Rwanda enjoyed a favourable trade balance with other blocs – COMESA and EAC, going by the data from the ministry.
