Santos, a onetime Soviet-trained fighter against the Portuguese colonial regime was one of Africa’s longest-serving leaders, ruling for four decades as Angola’s president. His presidency was allegedly marked with multi-billion dollar corruption and nepotism. The economic boom, the oil rich Algeria enjoyed was largely channelized to his family and a coterie of advisers. It was widely believed that his daughter Isabel dos Santos ran the country’s state oil company. She was named by Forbes magazine as Africa’s wealthiest woman, with a fortune estimated at $3.5 billion. His son José Filomeno de Sousa dos Santos controlled the country’s $5 billion sovereign wealth fund.
After he was replaced in 2017 by President João Lourenço from the same party as Dos Santos – the People’s Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) Santos had been living in self-imposed exile in Spain.
