Algeria, Niger, and Nigeria have decided to revive the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline (TSGP) project.
At a time when Europe is looking for alternate sources of natural gas away from Russia, Nigeria has been taking some proactive steps to turn the situation to its advantage.
Algeria, Niger, and Nigeria have decided to revive the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline (TSGP) project. The collective decision was reached at a two-day joint meeting held in Abuja last week by petroleum authorities from the three African nations. The project was initially conceived more than 4 decades ago but the interest was renewed after Russia’s war on Ukraine. The decades-old, multi-billion-dollar gas project has the capacity to transfer up to 30 billion cubic meters of gas per year to Europe from Nigeria to Algeria and on to Europe. The 4,128-kilometer-long gas pipeline will pass from southern Nigeria to Algeria via Niger.
Energy experts feel that with the rising demand for natural gas, the TSGP project could benefit the local economies and transform Africa’s energy future if properly implemented. Analysts also noted that the fructification of the project needs a strong political will. If not, it will also get stalled like the pipeline project between Nigeria and Ghana which was stalled over time due to a lack of political will than not unavailability of resources.
Nigeria’s petroleum minister, Timipre Sylva, revealed that attempts are on to source funding for the project from Europe. A committee also has been set up by the countries for conducting the feasibility study. The committee will meet for a review of the progress at the end of July.
Last month Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) announced its plan to implement a deal on a gas pipeline to Europe through Morocco. Nigeria is also planning to transport more gas from southern to northern Nigeria and build a major gas turbine in Abuja.
