Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi said his country is looking forward to enriching its partnership with the European Union (EU), in order to achieve a qualitative leap in the relationship between the two sides. He addressed a joint press conference with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who is currently visiting Cairo. The Egyptian president stressed that Egypt considered the EU the main partner in development. He also indicated that his country was looking forward to having tie-ups with the EU in energy, the details of which were being worked out.
He also stressed that Egypt was keen to reach a legally binding agreement on the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD). He assured that Egypt would continue to intensify coordination with regional powers to fight against terrorism and illegal migration. The discussions between President Al-Sisi and von der Leyen included vital issues of common concern, particularly food security and energy crises.
von der Leyen said that Egypt was a reliable partner to find solutions for the food security crisis. She pointed out that the Russia and Ukraine war affected Europe as the continent is dependent on Russian energy exports. Egypt, she said, has the capabilities to be a pioneer in the field of new and renewable energy, stressing commitment to a strong partnership with Egypt in all fields.
