On 15 May 2018, Zimbabwe’s President Emmerson Mnangagwa submitted an application to re-join the Commonwealth group of 54 countries. To re-join, Zimbabwe has to prove that it complies with the fundamental values set out in the Commonwealth Charter
Following a diplomatic tussle with the UK in 2003, Zimbabwe withdrew from the Commonwealth. The country is keen to be readmitted into the group now and is on a re-engagement drive. At the Commonwealth meeting in Kigali, a large delegation from Zimbabwe, including Ministers, business leaders, students, and members of civil society are attending the commonwealth forums. Zimbabwe was invited to attend the conference as an observer.
On 15 May 2018, Zimbabwe’s President Emmerson Mnangagwa submitted an application to re-join the Commonwealth group of 54 countries. To re-join, Zimbabwe has to prove that it complies with the fundamental values set out in the Commonwealth Charter such as democracy and rule of law, protection of human rights, freedom of expression etc. The membership process includes an informal assessment undertaken by representatives of the Secretary-General, followed by consultations with other Commonwealth countries and so on.
